Turn a source sheet into a clear submission.
Reliable item setup depends on complete inputs and careful mapping. Identify the required fields for the product type, resolve gaps against an approved source, submit, and then verify the item — Walmart accepts many submissions that it will not publish.
Inputs
Collect, for every item: the GTIN, your SKU, brand, product name, product type, the required attributes for that type, key features (bullets), a description, price, shipping weight and dimensions, and image URLs — Walmart ingests images from publicly reachable URLs in setup feeds, so the images must be hosted before the upload. Main images should be at least 1,000 px square on a white background; 2,000 px is the recommendation.
Validation before submission
Check the sheet for the four classic faults: blanks in required attributes, inconsistent units (mL in one row, oz in another), duplicate SKUs or GTINs across rows, and values in the wrong column (a case quantity in the unit-count field). Confirm any missing value from an approved source. A required field filled with a plausible guess passes processing and produces a wrong item.
Three ways to set up
- Single item (Catalog → Add New Items) — enter the GTIN; if Walmart already carries the product, you are offered a match and only supply offer data. Otherwise you complete the full form for the product type. Good for a handful of items.
- Setup by Match — a bulk spreadsheet for items that already exist on Walmart.com: GTIN, SKU, price, quantity, shipping, and little else. Fast, but you inherit the existing content.
- Full Item Spec — the category-specific template for new items: every attribute, images, and offer data. Download the spec for the product type from Add New Items, complete it, upload it.
Pick per batch: match what exists, create what does not, and do not create a new item for a product already in the catalog — Walmart de-duplicates by GTIN and will merge or reject it.
Reading the Activity Feed
Every upload becomes a feed with an ID. The Activity Feed shows its status and, per item, whether it succeeded or errored with a message — a missing required attribute, an invalid GTIN, an image URL that could not be fetched, a value outside the allowed list. Fix the affected rows and resubmit only those. A feed that reports success has been ingested; it has not necessarily published.
Verify the item
After processing, check three places: Manage Items for the SKU's published status, Unpublished Items if it is not live (the reason code tells you what to fix), and the live Walmart.com page for content, images, and the offer. Only then mark setup complete.
Onthoud
Use the source to confirm a missing value. Do not fill a required field with a guess — it will process, and it will be wrong.

Scenario
A fictional source sheet lists three bottles for a Full Item Spec upload. One row has a blank size, one capacity is written as 25 fl oz while the others are in mL, and two rows share the same SKU.
Oefening
- Flag the missing size for confirmation from the approved source.
- Make the capacity units consistent without changing their meaning.
- Investigate the repeated SKU before creating the submission — duplicate or source error?
Toon een voorgestelde aanpak
Confirm the missing size, convert 25 fl oz to its mL equivalent (about 739 mL — check whether the source meant 750), and determine whether the repeated SKU is two rows for one product or a copy-paste error. Re-check the corrected data, then upload; read the Activity Feed, and inspect the items in Manage Items and on the live page before closing the task.
