Content maintenance: updates, content rules, and Listing Quality

Keep live Walmart items accurate — the request, process, review loop, single-item edits versus bulk content, price and inventory templates, the content rules that block or demote an item, Listing Quality as a worklist, and verifying every change on the live page.

  • ✓Record a content change precisely and run it through request, process and review.
  • ✓Choose between a single-item edit and the right bulk template for a content, price or inventory change.
  • ✓Apply Walmart's content rules for product names, key features, descriptions, claims and images.
  • ✓Read the Listing Quality score and turn its attribute list into a worklist.
  • ✓Verify every change on the live page and know why another contributor's content may display instead of yours.

Track changes through to the shelf.

Keep requested content changes traceable from source approval to the visible item page. Walmart processes every update per item, so a batch of five can end as four successes and one silent failure — and your record of the change has to say so.

Request, process, review

Every content change, from one attribute on one SKU to a rewrite across a range, runs through the same loop:

  1. Record the request — the SKU, the changed fields, the approved values and their source; Item setup covers why a change without a source is a guess.
  2. Submit — a single-item edit for a few fields on a few SKUs, or a bulk template for anything larger.
  3. Record the result — the feed ID from the Activity Feed, or the save confirmation of a single edit — read per item, not per file.
  4. Verify on the live page — open each item on Walmart.com and compare with the request, field by field.
  5. Keep the unresolved open — with current and intended values, until the page matches.

Walmart re-scores, sometimes re-reviews, updated content, so a successful feed can take hours to display — its guides quote up to a day for bulk updates, longer when content goes through review.

Single edits versus bulk templates

Single-item edits — open the SKU from the item list and edit the field directly. Right for one SKU or a handful, and for checking what Walmart holds: each attribute on the edit page carries a status showing whether your value is displayed; check there before concluding a feed failed.

Bulk templates — spreadsheets from Seller Center, one per kind of change. Names shift, and Walmart also ships lag-time, shipping and other offer templates, but three matter here:

  • A content maintenance spec for product content — names, features, descriptions, images, attributes — organized by product type, with no price or quantity.
  • A price template for prices (the current one also takes promotional prices), no content.
  • An inventory template for quantities only.

Maintenance keeps content and offer apart, so classify first, as Catalog fundamentals teaches. Download a fresh template every time: columns get added and renamed, and a stale copy can map values to the wrong attributes. Check how the reference tab treats an empty cell before assuming a blank means "no change".

Content rules that matter

Walmart revises its content standards often; check current limits before a large rewrite. What holds from release to release:

  • Product name — brand, product, key attribute, then size or count. Walmart names a recommended length range and a hard maximum; no promotional words, ALL CAPS or special characters.
  • Key features — short, benefit-led bullets within Walmart's allowed count, each a checkable fact, not a slogan.
  • Description — plain text, at least Walmart's recommended length, about the product, not the offer.
  • Prohibited claims — no comparisons with other retailers or sellers, no external links, contact details or prices, no unsupported health or safety claims, no shipping or promotion text.
  • Images — a main image on a white background, product filling the frame, at or above Walmart's minimum resolution, plus additional views; no watermarks, text or placeholders. A non-compliant main image is a publishing block, not a quality note.

Attributes the spec marks as recommended drive search filters; leaving them empty lowers discoverability without blocking the item.

Listing Quality as a worklist

Listing Quality (under Growth Opportunities in most layouts; Walmart now titles the page Listing Quality & Rewards) gives each item a score and lists what would raise it. Components get regrouped and renamed; today Walmart's guide scores content (attributes, name, features, description, images), price competitiveness, shipping, published and in stock, and ratings and reviews, with a post-purchase quality figure beside the score that does not count toward it. Only the content component is fixed with content; no rewrite moves the others.

Use it as a worklist, not a report:

  1. Filter to the content component and the items that matter most.
  2. Open an item and note the attributes it flags — usually the spec's recommended ones.
  3. Group fixes by product type and submit one content template per type, or use the dashboard's bulk attribute editor (labels change) to export the flagged attributes, edit and upload back.
  4. Re-check after Walmart re-scores; the score lags the feed by hours or days, so verify the page, not the number.

Unpublished items and the live-page check

Unpublished Items lists every SKU that is not live with Walmart's reason — content (a missing required attribute, a non-compliant image), offer (a price outside Walmart's pricing rules) or compliance (a restricted category or brand). An item that is not live cannot show any content change, so clear the block first; Catalog troubleshooting covers the reasons.

Also confirm the displayed content is yours. Walmart builds one page per Item ID and decides ownership per attribute — a brand owner or authorized reseller generally outranks other sellers, and Walmart's own data can outrank both — so your update can process while another contributor's name stays displayed. If the displayed content is wrong for the product, Partner support cases covers raising it. If it is merely weaker than yours, the fix is ownership, not more attributes: register the brand in Walmart's Brand Portal if you hold the trademark, or request authorized-reseller status — and keep submitting the better content, since a non-owner's submission goes to Walmart's content review and shows only if judged better.

ポイント
Record what was requested, submitted, and verified — per item, not per batch — and treat a change as closed only when the live page shows it.

シナリオ

Five fictional items receive description updates in one content feed. The Activity Feed reports success for all five. Four pages show the new description; the fifth still displays the previous text and has appeared in Unpublished Items with a missing-image reason.

演習

  1. Verify the four successful results on their live pages and record them as closed, with the feed ID.
  2. Keep the fifth item open with its current and intended description, and note that the publishing block is a separate issue with its own fix.
  3. Decide the order of fixes for the fifth item and what you need to see before closing it.
推奨アプローチを表示

Close the four changes only after each live page matches the request. For the fifth, the description feed succeeded but the item is unpublished for a missing image — an item that is not live cannot show any content change. Supply a compliant main image through a single-item edit or the content template, confirm the SKU leaves Unpublished Items, then re-check the description on the live page; if it is still old, resubmit the content for that SKU alone and read its per-item result. Never treat the batch as complete because most of it succeeded.

問題 1

01A content feed for five items reports success for all five in the Activity Feed. Four live pages show the approved update; the fifth still shows the old text. Which status best represents the batch?

問題 2

02You need to change the price on 300 SKUs and correct the description on two of them, all in one product type. How do you submit the changes?

問題 3

03Where does Walmart tell you which attributes a particular live item is missing or should improve, so that its discoverability rises?

問題 4

04Your content update for a shared item processed with no errors and the item is published, yet the live page still shows a product name you did not submit — accurate for the product, just weaker than yours. What is the most likely explanation, and what do you do?

問題 5

05A colleague asks which of these problems would actually take a SKU off the shelf (into Unpublished Items), rather than just lowering its Listing Quality score. Select all that apply.

問題 6

06Put the steps of handling one content change in the order the lesson teaches, from the request to the record.
