Variant groups: grouping items so every option leads to the right product

How Walmart variant groups work — Variant Group ID, variant attribute names and values, the primary variant, swatch and per-item images — grouping from the Catalog page or the Full Item Spec, what breaks a group, and reviewing it option by option.

Make every option easy to distinguish.

Variant work begins with the relationship between the products and the values shoppers use to tell them apart. Check the product type's allowed variant attributes before you group, give every item distinct values and its own images, and review the group as a shopper afterward.

How a Walmart variant group is built

A group is defined by four things:

  • Variant Group ID — a short alphanumeric string you define (Walmart caps its length), shared by every item in the family. Different IDs mean different groups.
  • Variant attribute names — what differs between the items, such as color, size, or count, taken from the product type's allowed list (the product type sets that list; see Catalog fundamentals). Every item declares the same names.
  • Variant attribute values — each item's own value for each name.
  • Primary variant — the item you flag as the default for search and the group page; Walmart treats the flag as a suggestion.

Unlike an Amazon variation family (Amazon 3P → Parenting and variations), there is no non-buyable parent record: the group is a relationship between sellable items. Walmart caps both the number of variant attributes and the group size, and the limits change — check the current limit before building a large family.

Relationship and values

Confirm the items are versions of one product — same brand, same product, differing only in the variant attributes — and that the product type allows those attributes. A 750 mL bottle in three colors is a group; a bottle and its lid are not, even from one brand.

Then map every item to distinct values:

  • Every item needs its own combination of values; two with the same combination cannot both be shown (see the faults below).
  • Some attributes are free text (color, size); others are closed lists (Color Category, for example). Use closed-list values exactly as listed — an off-list value errors in the feed, as Item setup describes. Free-text values are compared as given, so keep spelling, casing, and units identical: Blue and blue, or 750 mL and 750ml, read as different options.
  • Declare as few variant attributes as the family needs; adding size to a color-only group forces an empty or identical size value on every item.

Two ways to group

Both paths follow one order:

  1. Confirm the relationship and the product type's allowed variant attributes.
  2. Map every item to distinct, consistent values.
  3. Assign the Variant Group ID, attribute names, and primary variant, and submit.
  4. Open the group on Walmart.com and check every option.

Step 3 differs:

  • From the Catalog page — in the item list (often "Manage Items"; Walmart's guides call it the Items dashboard), select the existing items and use the create-variant-group action (under More actions at the time of writing), then enter the ID, names, values, and primary. Best for items already selling; check its item limit before selecting a large family.
  • Through the Full Item Spec — the template Item setup covers (Walmart's download may be labelled Full Setup Template): fill the variant columns for every item in one upload — ID, attribute names, values, and the primary flag on one row. Best for new or large families.

Grouping is a content change: it goes through a feed, shows in the Activity Feed, and can be blocked like any other.

Swatch images and per-item images

A group has two kinds of images.

Per-item images belong to each item. Every item carries its own main image and additional views, and selecting an option switches the page to that item's images; nothing is borrowed from a sibling. A missing or non-compliant main image is a publishing block, and an unpublished item is not offered as an option on the live page (Content maintenance covers the rules). Photograph each variant as sold: a green bottle with a blue photo is a return waiting to happen.

Swatch images are the small images in the option selector. Where the product type supports them, you name which attribute the swatch represents (typically color) and supply one swatch image URL per value — items sharing a value point at the same image, so a green bottle in three sizes needs one green swatch, not three. Without swatches, Walmart shows options as text-labelled tiles and may pick a swatch from your item images. Swatches are optional; per-item images are not.

What breaks a group, and the experience check

Four faults break most groups:

  • Duplicate values — two items with the same combination of values cannot both be shown; Walmart may report a variant error, and one option is missing until the values differ.
  • Mismatched attribute names — one item declares color and size, another only color; the odd item is split off or rejected.
  • Items in different product types — each type has its own allowed list, so the group cannot form. Moving the odd item is a product-type correction you often cannot make in place; it may take a case (Partner support cases).
  • An unpublished primary — the flagged item is not live, so it cannot be where shoppers land; Walmart opens a published sibling of its choosing. Keep the primary published, or move the flag.

After the feed processes, click through every option on Walmart.com: none duplicated or missing; each switches images, name, price, and availability to its own item; the item that opens is a published member, ideally your primary; Walmart choosing another published variant is not a data fault.

Lembre-se
Correct group membership is only part of the job. Each option must lead to the right item, with its own image, price, and content.

Cenário

A fictional bottle group is meant to hold two published items, a blue bottle and a green one, under one Variant Group ID. In the source mapping both are labeled blue, and the green item's main image is a photo of the blue bottle. Neither item has a swatch image yet.

Exercício

  1. Confirm the actual color of each item from the approved source, and check that `color` is an allowed variant attribute for the product type.
  2. Correct the duplicate color value, replace the green item's main image, and add a swatch for each color if the product type supports them.
  3. Plan the review: which option should show which item, image, name, and price, and which item you flag as the primary.
Mostrar uma abordagem sugerida

Keep the exact SKUs, set the green item's `color` value to Green and replace its main image with a photo of the green bottle. Submit the group with one Variant Group ID, `color` as the only variant attribute, and the blue item as primary, because it is published and has correct images. After the feed processes, open the group on Walmart.com: confirm the page opens on the blue item you flagged as primary, select Green and confirm the page switches to the green item with the green image and its own price, then check Blue the same way. If Green is still missing, check the Activity Feed before changing anything else.

Pergunta 1

01A two-item bottle group's feed shows success, but on Walmart.com only a Blue option appears and the green bottle cannot be reached. In the spec, both items carry the color value Blue. What should you do?

Pergunta 2

02A three-color bottle group was built with the Black bottle as the primary variant. Last week the Black item was unpublished for a non-compliant main image, and the group page on Walmart.com now opens on the Green bottle, which you did not choose. What should you do?

Pergunta 3

03Which set of items is a valid variant group?

Pergunta 4

04A colleague selected 12 existing water bottles in the item list and grouped them from the Catalog page. Later, the items still appear as separate pages on Walmart.com. What should you check first?

Pergunta 5

05A colleague has finished grouping 20 bottles and asks you to review before calling it done. Which checks belong in that review? Select all that apply.

Selecione todas as que se aplicam.

Pergunta 6

06Put these steps in the order the lesson recommends for building a variant group.
