Catalog fundamentals: product data, offer data, and Walmart identifiers

How a Walmart Marketplace item is put together — GTIN, SKU, Walmart Item ID, product type — the difference between product content and offer data, and how to classify an issue before you touch anything.

  • Separate product data (what the item is) from offer data (how you sell it).
  • Map your SKU to the exact product, and know which identifiers Walmart assigns versus which you supply.
  • Find your way around Seller Center: Catalog, Orders, Growth Opportunities, Analytics, Help.
  • Classify an issue as content, offer, or publishing before choosing a fix.
Ler

Keep identity and offer data distinct.

A product record describes what an item is. An offer describes how it is sold. On Walmart the two are edited through different workflows and break for different reasons, so the first skill is telling them apart.

Identifiers

  • GTIN (UPC / EAN / GTIN-14) — required for almost every item and validated against GS1. It is the key Walmart uses to decide whether your item matches something already on Walmart.com.
  • SKU — your identifier for the offer. It is permanent: Walmart does not let you rename a SKU after creation, so define it carefully. A wrong SKU means retiring the item and creating a new one.
  • Walmart Item ID — Walmart's catalog identifier, assigned on publication. Shared by every seller on the same item, and what the Walmart.com URL carries.
  • Product type — the category-specific template that decides which attributes are required and which variant attributes are allowed.

Product data versus offer data

Product data is the shared content: product name, brand, description, key features, images, attributes, and the product type. Walmart builds one item page per Walmart Item ID from the best available content — much like Amazon's contributions, the seller with the higher content quality can win the displayed page.

Offer data is yours alone: price, inventory, fulfillment (seller-fulfilled or WFS), shipping template, and offer status. It never changes what the page says about the product.

The Buy Box on Walmart is won on offer data — price, shipping speed, and availability — not on content.

Seller Center map

  • Catalog → Manage Items — every SKU with its published/unpublished status, and single-item edits.
  • Catalog → Add New Items — single setup, or bulk uploads via spreadsheet.
  • Catalog → Unpublished Items — items that are not live and the reason code for each.
  • Activity Feed — the status of every feed you submit (item setup, price, inventory, content updates) and its errors.
  • Growth Opportunities → Listing Quality — Walmart's content quality and offer scores per item, with the attributes it wants improved.
  • Help — Partner Support cases and the Seller Help knowledge base.

Classify before you act

Every catalog problem is one of three kinds:

  1. Content — the page misdescribes the product (wrong capacity, missing key feature, bad image). Fix through an item content update.
  2. Offer — the price, quantity, or shipping is wrong. Fix through a price or inventory feed, or the offer edit.
  3. Publishing — the item is not visible at all. Diagnose in Unpublished Items; the reason code tells you whether it is a content, offer, or compliance problem underneath.

Misclassifying costs days: a capacity error is not fixed by a price feed, and an unpublished item is not fixed by re-uploading content that was never the problem.

Cenário

A fictional item shows the correct name and images on Walmart.com but is out of stock in Seller Center while your warehouse has 400 units. A second item is live but its description says 500 mL for a 750 mL bottle.

Exercício

  1. Classify the availability problem as offer-related and identify the feed or edit that fixes it.
  2. Classify the capacity mismatch as product-content-related and identify what evidence you need.
  3. Record the source information required to investigate each issue, and keep their outcomes separate.

The stock discrepancy is an offer issue: check the last inventory feed in the Activity Feed for errors, then resubmit the quantity. The capacity error is a content issue: confirm 750 mL against the approved specification, then submit a content update for that attribute. Track them as two items — one can be resolved while the other is still open.

Pergunta 2

02Which identifier can you not change after an item is created?

Pergunta 3

03An item is not visible on Walmart.com. Where do you find out why?
