Brand programs and gating: Brand Registry, GTIN exemption, approvals, and Virtual Bundles
The programs that decide what you may list and whose edits win the page: Brand Registry eligibility and authority, GTIN exemption, approvals (category, brand or ASIN), whitelisting a GS1 prefix the brand does not own, and Virtual Bundles for brand-registered FBA sellers.

- ✓Decide whether a brand qualifies for Brand Registry and name what enrollment unlocks for catalog work.
- ✓Apply for a GTIN exemption with proof that will be accepted, and list the product once it is granted.
- ✓Request category, brand or ASIN approval with documents that pass, then read a rejection and close the specific gap.
- ✓Recognize a brand/product ID mismatch and route it to a whitelisting case with the right evidence.
- ✓Judge when a Virtual Bundle is the right object, and when a real kit or a catalog fix is needed instead.
Get the permission before you build the listing.
Everything so far assumed you were allowed to list the product; when a contribution lost, the answer was Brand Registry authority or a case. This module covers the permissions behind both — Brand Registry, GTIN exemption, approvals, prefix whitelisting — and the Virtual Bundle a brand-registered FBA (Fulfillment by Amazon) seller builds on listings that already work.
Brand Registry: eligibility, enrollment, and what it unlocks
Eligibility rests on a trademark: an active registration in the marketplace's country, as a text mark or an image mark containing words, letters or numbers. A pending application qualifies if filed through Amazon's IP Accelerator program, or at a subset of trademark offices; check your country's current rules.
Enrollment asks for the registration or application number, the brand name exactly as the trademark record spells it, and images of products and packaging with the brand permanently applied; Amazon then verifies through the contact on the trademark record.
For catalog work the first unlock is contribution authority: Catalog fundamentals explains that a detail page is assembled from ranked contributions, and enrollment is why a brand owner's edits generally win over a reseller's. It also opens tools in Seller Central and the Brand Registry portal: A+ Content, a Store, Brand Analytics, Virtual Bundles, and brand protection (Report a Violation, plus eligibility to enroll in Transparency and, by invitation, Project Zero). Only Virtual Bundles is taught here.
GTIN exemption: listing without a barcode
Some products have no GS1 code: handmade goods, parts, sets you package yourself, brands that never licensed any. For these Amazon grants a GTIN exemption on its own Seller Central page, per brand and category (bottles do not cover mugs). A brand already using GS1 barcodes does not qualify, and Amazon withdraws exemptions found on one: codes on some items rule out exemptions for the rest.
Proof is images of product and packaging with the brand permanently affixed (printed, engraved, sewn in), never a sticker. If you do not own the brand, add a letter from the owner or manufacturer on letterhead naming your business and stating the products carry no GTIN; a resale authorization alone does not.
Afterwards nothing appears by itself. Create the product as Listing creation describes: in Add Products tick "I don't have a product ID"; in a flat file leave product_id and product_id_type blank and set the exemption column in current templates (Is exempt from supplier declared external product identifier, or similar) to Yes. Amazon assigns the ASIN.
Approvals: category, brand, and ASIN
Amazon restricts selling at three levels: a category (approval before any listing), a brand (approved seller by seller), and an individual ASIN. Requests start from the product's Apply to sell or Request approval action in Add Products or Manage All Inventory. Some categories approve automatically on account standing; others want documents.
The form currently asks for:
- invoices from the manufacturer or an authorized distributor, dated within the last 180 days, for at least 10 units, in the business name and address on your account; or
- a brand authorization letter on its letterhead naming your business.
Rejections come from the document: a retail receipt, an invoice in another name, a pro-forma invoice, an edited file, an unauthorized supplier. A paid "ungating service" cannot shortcut this: only your supplier can invoice your business. The loop:
- Identify the restriction level.
- Gather the documents the form names.
- Submit the request.
- Read the rejection reason and close that gap.
- Verify by listing the item.
GTIN and brand mismatches: whitelisting a prefix
GS1 licenses every GTIN to one legal entity, as a company prefix or a single code, and Amazon compares the GS1 record's licensee with the brand you list. When they differ (parent company, contract manufacturer) the upload fails on a brand/product ID mismatch — a valid code licensed to a name Amazon cannot tie to the brand. The processing report names it; Listing creation files this GS1 cause under a rejected brand name.
Tempting shortcuts: naming the licensee as the brand misdescribes the product and breaks the trademark match; exemptions are for products without a code; a new GTIN under the brand's own name clears the error by giving one product two codes — a last resort, not a fix.
The fix is a Seller Support case asking Amazon to accept the prefix (or the GTIN) for the brand — sellers call this whitelisting the prefix — with the GS1 record naming the licensee and a document linking it to the brand (a licensing agreement or corporate record). Seller Support cases covers writing it.
Virtual Bundles: a merchandising object
A Virtual Bundle combines two to five of your own brand's FBA ASINs into one listing with its own ASIN, title, bullets, images and price. No new GTIN and no packaging: Amazon picks the components from FBA stock per order. Requirements: Brand Registry, and every component an in-stock FBA ASIN of your brand. The tool sits in the Brands menu; the main image should show every component.
Limits:
- The bundle goes out of stock whenever any component does.
- A bundle cannot be a child in an ordinary product's variation family; the help page says what is currently allowed between bundles.
Treat it as merchandising, not a catalog fix. It does not replace a kit you package yourself (its own GTIN or exemption, its own page), and it does not repair a duplicate listing or a broken family. Use it to pair a selling item with an accessory, or to test a set before packaging it.
تذكّر
Each program is a permission, not a listing: Brand Registry decides whose contribution wins, exemptions and approvals decide what you may list, and a Virtual Bundle is merchandising, never a repair.

السيناريو
AquaTrail is in Brand Registry and every bottle ships through FBA. Three jobs wait: TRAIL-TAN-750, a hand-sewn 750 mL bottle sleeve under TrailStitch, a second brand you own with no GS1 codes; TRAIL-GRY-1000, a 1 L grey bottle whose upload failed with a brand/product ID mismatch because its GTIN's prefix is licensed to the parent company; and a request to sell TRAIL-BLU-750 and TRAIL-GRN-500 as a set without repackaging.
التمرين
- Name the program each job needs — GTIN exemption, a whitelisting case, or a Virtual Bundle — and what has to be true before you start it.
- List the proof for the exemption and the evidence for the case, and check what the set needs in FBA stock before it can be created.
- Decide the order of the three jobs and how you verify each one is finished.
عرض النهج المقترح
TRAIL-TAN-750 needs a GTIN exemption for TrailStitch in the sleeve's category: photograph the sleeve and packaging with the brand sewn in, apply, then create the listing with the product ID left blank. TRAIL-GRY-1000 has a valid code licensed to the wrong entity, so no exemption applies: gather the GS1 record naming the parent company and a document tying it to the AquaTrail trademark, and open the whitelisting case. The set is a Virtual Bundle of two existing ASINs: confirm both are in FBA stock and build it in the Brands menu while the other two jobs wait on Amazon. Verify each by listing: the sleeve appears with an ASIN, the grey bottle's upload processes without the mismatch, and the bundle shows in stock with both components.
